Mission Statement
The mission of the St. Anthony-New Brighton Guidance Counseling department is to empower all students, K-12, to achieve success in school and develop into contributing members of our society by assisting them in acquiring competencies in academic, career, and self-knowledge/interpersonal areas of development.

Student Services

Works with students individually, in small groups and in classrooms on academic, behavioral and social issues;

Offers groups which may include orientation for new students to the school, social skills, anger management, friendship skills, family change, etc.;

  • Works with staff and families regarding the needs of students;
  • Facilitates home-school partnerships for student benefit, and helps families find community resources;
  • Facilitate the School Climate and Behavior committee, which plans building level practices and activities to maintain a safe and respectful school environment;
  • Follows through on reports of inappropriate behavior, investigates student complaints, and maintains data on building behavior issues;
  • Facilitates the Student Assistance Committee, which offers consultation and intervention for student and classroom needs;
  • Coordinates group standardized testing (Gates-Macginitie Reading tests, Iowa Tests of Basic Skills, Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments, Measures of Academic Progress;
  • Manages 504 plans for reasonable school accommodations for students with illnesses and disabilities (Americans with Disabilities Act)
  • Collaborates with community agencies;
  • Serves on the Crisis Response Team along with the principal, school nurse, school psychologist, and others as needed.

Nursing Services - Lori Watzl-King and Sandra Rabine at 612-706-1205
Daily nursing services include: student contact for sickness and first aid; administration of medications and implementation of specific medical procedures and treatments; and maintaining health records, supplies and equipment. Services provided throughout the school year include: identification and assessment of health concerns; training of staff (blood borne pathogens, CPR and first aid); hearing, vision and scoliosis screening; and coordination of the human growth and development unit for 4th and 5th graders.

Principal/Building Secretary - Cindy Ridge at 612-706-1202
The building secretary creates a welcoming climate for students and their families, staff and visitors to the building. She coordinates all of the office functions of the school, including the student database, family/staff communications (newsletters, etc.) and as the principal's secretary assists with the overall operation of the school.

Student Support Services - Helen Siggelkow at 612-706-1206
The student support services coordinator is responsible for attendance; updating student information and census information; preparing and processing new student records; and coordinating, facilitating and supervising enrichment opportunities. She calls substitutes, assists with Wilshire Park office duties and assumes full-time secretarial duties when the school secretary is absent. She is also the designated JMC trainer for the building.

Available Child Care
Community Services offers an Extended Day Child Care program that provides before and after-school care for children in grades K-6. Full day care is provided on school release days and vacation days.
