St. Anthony-New Brighton School Board passes Policy 606.5 Library Materials

The Minnesota State Legislature passed a law in 2024 requiring school libraries to create a policy for how library materials are chosen and how families can request changes to certain materials. The school board reviewed the proposed Policy 606.5 on Nov. 6, Dec. 3, and finally took action on Jan. 7. Embedded within the policy is the need to have a Library Material Review Committee. St. Anthony-New Brighton’s Policy 606.5 on library materials was approved by the school board on Jan. 7, 2025, and is now in effect.

St. Anthony-New Brighton’s two school libraries are invaluable to our students and staff. They provide a quiet space to learn, explore, and discover. The St. Anthony-New Brighton school board supports a library system that meets the needs and interests of all students.

“Every book is an opportunity to learn about new ideas and perspectives,” said school board Policy Committee Chair Dr. Cassandra Palmer. “With the adoption of Policy 606.5 we are affirming our commitment to intellectual freedom, diversity of thought, and the right for every student to explore the world within our Media Centers. Education thrives in an environment where curiosity is encouraged.”

The board and library staff do not remove materials because of an author’s race, nationality, religion, sex, or political views. Library materials are chosen to match the needs, ages, and interests of students, as well as their learning and emotional development. The director of effective instruction and library staff are responsible for selecting high-quality materials for students and processing requests for reconsideration.

Through thoughtful selection and inclusive practices, St. Anthony-New Brighton School District is committed to fostering a library environment that nurtures brilliance, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning for all students.
