Welcome St. Anthony Village High School's new College & Career Coordinator!

Welcome St. Anthony Village High School's new College & Career Coordinator!

You may have heard of St. Anthony Village High School’s (SAVHS) new College & Career department, a resource designed to help high school students of all grades plan for their lives after high school. Since the department is new, SAVHS Principal Norman Bell and Assistant Principal Paul Ruble tried a new interview and hiring process for the position.

“The interview panel included students, parents, school counselors, and high school administrators, representing the diverse perspectives of our school community,” said Principal Bell. “Utilizing a collaborative and inclusive approach, our goal was to identify a candidate with the skills, vision, and commitment to enhancing college and career readiness for our students.”

Together, the panelists discussed each candidate’s qualifications and submitted their recommendations. These recommendations ultimately led to the hiring of Emerson Sears, our new College & Career Coordinator!

Emerson brings valuable experience to the role having worked at two public universities in admissions and academic advising. Her background makes her a unique addition to the school. Emerson graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in communications and a minor in psychology.

When asked about her take on the interview process, Emerson said, “We’re all trying to make the most positive impact on the lives of students and their families, this type of interview process helps make that possible.”

That’s one of Emerson’s priorities, ensuring parents/guardians are involved in the future-proofing process for their teenagers. She knows many families consider the traditional pathway of a 4-year university, Emerson is excited to highlight different options based on the student’s needs.

“I’m currently researching internship, apprenticeship, and job shadowing opportunities for our students so they can know what the day-to-day in a profession looks like,” Emerson shared. If college is what a student wants, she emphasizes exploring potential majors early to avoid several major changes once they’re enrolled.

Emerson’s number one goal is simple: to help as many students and families as she can. Make sure to stop by her office in Room #212 for a quick chat about which Drake song she has on repeat or to dive into an in-depth discussion about what’s next after St. Anthony!
