Dr. Joel Leer Named Principal of St. Anthony Village High School

St. Anthony–New Brighton Schools (ISD 282) is pleased to announce that Dr. Joel Leer has been selected as the next principal of St. Anthony Village High School (SAVHS), beginning in the 2026–2027 school year.

Dr. Leer brings more than 25 years of experience in public education, including 16 years as a high school principal, as well as experience as an assistant principal, teacher, and university faculty member. He holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership from the University of Minnesota and has contributed to research and professional learning focused on equity and student access.

He previously served as interim principal at SAVHS in spring 2025, where he built strong relationships with students, staff, and families and developed a deep understanding of the school community. Throughout the selection process, he was recognized as a veteran leader who brings both experience and stability, and who has already earned the trust of staff.

Dr. Leer shared that returning to SAVHS “feels in many ways like coming home,” describing the school as a special place with a strong sense of community. He noted that his leadership will focus on relationships, listening, and ensuring every student and staff member experiences a strong sense of belonging and support.

Superintendent Renee Corneille said the selection reflects both the district’s priorities and the input of the school community, noting that Dr. Leer demonstrates strong instructional leadership, visible and relational leadership, and a deep commitment to student success. She added that the district “intentionally used a comprehensive, community-informed process” and expressed confidence in both the process and the outcome.

Dr. Leer’s selection provides continuity for SAVHS while positioning the school for continued growth and stability.
