Dear SAMS and SAVHS families,
A state-wide school walkout is scheduled to take place from 1 p.m. to 1:47 p.m., on Monday, April 19. The purpose of this student-led event is to stand in solidarity against racial injustice.
We respect this state-wide movement as well as the rights of students who choose not to participate.
As a school district, we recognize our role is not to promote or discourage student participation in these events. Here is an article to help understand the rights of students in public schools. Students who attend a public school have First Amendment rights— as long as there is not a substantial disruption to school activities and the rights of others.
Our primary goals:
- Support students as they exercise their First Amendment rights.
- Keep students safe.
- Continue with classes for students who choose not to participate.
Important: If your child attends either St. Anthony Middle School (SAMS) or St. Anthony Village High School (SAVHS), and chooses to participate in the state-wide school walkout on April 19— and remains on school property— they will be allowed to return to the building to finish the school day and ride the bus home. Students who choose not to participate will continue with classes as scheduled.
Absences from class will be excused with parent/guardian permission. If a student leaves the building without an email or phone call from a parent/guardian giving permission, this may result in an unexcused absence. We will be reminding students to follow COVID-19 mitigation practices, such as wearing masks, social distancing, etc.
